Has your dentist recommended sealants for your teenager or child? Do you know what sealants are? Here are two links with great information about sealants. Sealants are a wise preventive care because it can save time, money, and the discomfort sometimes associated with dental fillings.

“If you want to quit smoking, check your cell phone”. This is from a study from the British medical journal “The Lancet”, after following 5800 smokers who were trying to quit. Smokers received motivational texts even up to 5 times a day, while also being able to text for help when cravings or relapses occurred. Caroline Free, lead researcher on the study says, smokers reported that the text messages helped them through the difficulty of stopping smoking, “It made them feel less isolated while they tried to quit.” TXT2STOP is the text to use for those looking for support in quitting. Free, believes that increased personalization and interactivity could make the text message program even more effective. (Jonathan Shorman. USA Today)

Flashing those pearly whites can do wonders for your life: it boosts your mood, relieves stress, lowers blood pressure, reduces pain, gives you more confidence and makes you look younger. Smilers are even more likely to get promoted.

The first step to a great smile is good oral hygiene- regular brushing, flossing and cleaning- exactly what your dentist has been telling you for years. And taking good care of your teeth and gums is critical to more than just your smile. Poor oral hygiene can result in periodontal disease, which has been linked to pneumonia, prostate cancer, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes, women with periodontal disease have a higher incidence of breast cancer. Harvard Medical School research said that men who had reported the disease had a 64% higher risk of pancreatic cancer compared to those who didn’t. Even when periodontal disease doesn’t lead to other major health problems, it causes overall misery: bad breath, tooth loss, and severe pain.

So do those basics of brushing, flossing, and check ups to keep periodontal disease out of your smile.

Happy 4th of July! We are so thankful to live in this nation with its freedoms and possibilities. We are grateful for those who dreamed and fought for our independence of the United States and for those who still do it today. Our nation has such great history, so here is some history of American Dentistry! The first dental school, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, opened in Baltimore, Maryland, USA in 1840. Philadelphia Dental College was founded in 1863 and is the second in the United States. In 1907 Temple University accepted a bid to incorporate the school” (Wikipedia Dental History).  Do you want to see more interesting dental history and pictures? Don't forget to floss and brush this 4th of July!
